Day 9
The last day.
I woke up this morning glad to think we only had four more hours to go. But, sad because my journey across the country, and most importantly, my time with Haley would soon come to an end. Because we didn't have that far to go today we took advantage of the comfortable beds of our hotel room. We took our time packing up and went down to the free breakfast. They had waffles!
We packed our bags into the car one final time, we got it down to a science by now. Haley wanted coffee, so she found a coffee shop in downtown Charleston that had a book shop attached.
Downtown Charleston is very charming.
We got back on the road and enjoyed the beautiful mountain landscape West Virginia has to offer. I commented that the mountains in western United States are bare of trees, but have the colorful rock formations. The east side is full of greenery and of course colorful leaves during the fall.
We were going to stop in the George Washington Jefferson National Park, but we couldn't figure out where exactly to go. So, we pulled off in Lewisburg WV. It was lunchtime and we found a nice place to share a pizza.
Again, not in a hurry, we decided to stretch our legs and walk up and down main street. There are a lot of nice little shops here to look through.
Haley decided to take the last leg of the trip. I sat in the passenger seat thinking about all the things we did and saw along the way. I am so happy of the time I was able to spend with my daughter along the way. I'm going to have to plan something like this with my son one day soon.
Here is the synopsis of the entire trip. We started in Reseda California. We drove just over 3300 miles. We didn't take a direct route, but the stops were well worth the detours. We spent a little more than 50 hours of drive time in the car. The drive itself took 7 days. We drove through a total of 17 states. A couple states we were in only momentarily, but we’re counting them. We spent around $750 in hotels, thanks to Cassie and her mom Nicole for hosting us in KC. That saved us about $150 and we got to meet Snoppy! We spent a little less than $550 on food. Thank goodness for those complimentary breakfasts at some of the hotels. Gas was way more than it should have been. Fortunately, Haleys KIA was averaging about 40 miles/gallon. But, with everything going on in the Middle East Asia, fuel prices were about $1.75 per gallon more than they should have been. We spent around $203 on gas for the entire trip.
